Where can one go to see a celebration like none other in the country that spans over 30 days and boasts more than 25 events including an exciting fireworks display, lively parades, majestic pageants, an elegant night of wine tasting, an edge-of-your-seat air show, a thrill seeking carnival with exhilarating rides and games, a Mardi Gras style street party, and one of the hottest events in the nation…. the world famous Jalapeño festival? Well, one has to travel to Laredo, TX of course!
Celebrating its 113th year, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration is the largest celebration of its kind in the United States with close to half a million people in attendance each year. Originally founded to commemorate the birth of the Founding Father of our country, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association continues to share the rich traditions of our community to vast audiences and attendees each year.
“Why celebrate George Washington’s birthday on the South Texas border?” you may ask. The answer lies with the original planners of the Celebration, the local chapter of the Yaqui Tribe #59 of the Improved Order of the Red Men, whose members included prominent Laredoans of both Mexican and American ancestry. In 1897, the patriotic lodge started to look for a traditionally “American” holiday that would offer the best of both cultures therefore setting the groundwork for the heritage of Laredo’s citizens, and thus the birth of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration.
A unique blend of a traditional Mexican Fiesta and a patriotic Fourth of July style bash, the 113th Washington’s Birthday Celebration will offer a lasting memory for every member of your family. Come see why the Washington’s Birthday Celebration is known as “The Celebration with Something for Everyone!”
This national and international event takes place this year from Jan. 21-Feb. 21, 2010.
